Content Marketing For Beginners: Complete Guide

If you’re new to content marketing and you want to learn how to use it for your business, then keep watching because in this tutorial, I’m going to walk you through a complete guide to content marketing for beginners. Stay tuned. [music] Alright, so let’s start with the basics and talk about what content marketing is. Simply put, content marketing is the process of creating and distributing content to attract and retain customers. Meaning, you’re creating blog posts, videos, podcasts, or whatever, promoting it, and your content’s job is to lead people towards a profitable action.

Now, if you’ve never really bought this whole idea of “content that sells,” this concept might not make a whole lot of sense or just sound cliche. So to help you better understand, I want to tell you about this piece of metal. This is a jungle gym gymnastics bar for kids that I bought recently. Now, in order to understand why I bought this product, and how content influenced me to buy it..

.let’s rewind. Over the past year or so, the city of Toronto has locked down three times.

And this was the second time that they closed down playgrounds. Now, when you have young children that are being forced to stay at home, they literally climb everything.

So my wife and I started researching. We searched on Google for things like “best home climbing equipment for kids.” We read some articles, and scrolled through the different types of products. Well..

. this slide would get boring quick and we already have a bunch of tunnels. And then we saw this: a mini jungle gym. So now we were heading in the right direction. So we went back to Google and searched for “best jungle gyms.

” We read through some more blog posts, narrowed our search down to items we might want to buy, watched some videos only to realize that our oldest child would be too big for the toy. So we went to Amazon to look at more options, found something like this, read the reviews, and then we bought it. We had a problem, searched for solutions, and content from blogs, videos, and reviews led us through our entire purchasing journey. And if you think about why and how you made your last purchase that wasn’t a necessity like groceries, or clothes, I bet content was involved along the way.

With so much information available at the tip of our fingers, we as consumers will be influenced by content.

Now, the content we read and watched was from multiple sites and creators. And the Amazon seller who got our hundred bucks just happened to luck out. But through the power of content marketing, you can intentionally integrate your company and products within these purchasing journeys. Let me show you an example of what we’ve done at Ahrefs. If you’re unfamiliar with our company, we sell a suite of SEO tools.

And in that suite is a keyword research tool called Keywords Explorer. So let’s say you decided to use SEO in your digital marketing strategy and you wanted to find a keyword research tool to use. You might go to Google and search for “list of keyword research tools.” You click on the first result, scroll through the list, click on a few here and there, but you’re still not ready to make a purchase because you realized..

. “I don’t even know how to do keyword research.” So you go back to Google and search for “how to do keyword research.” Sure enough, you recognize one of the names from the previous article you read plus, they’re ranking high in Google.

So you click through to their guide.

You skim through the guide and you’re impressed. You’re also introduced to our tool, Keywords Explorer. But you gotta head out to the gym, pick up the kids, and get dinner prepared so life goes on as usual. A few days later, you decide to look for more keyword research tutorials. So you go to YouTube and search for “keyword research.

” Sure enough, you see that same brand that just won’t quit. You click on the video, you’re impressed by the likes to dislikes ratio, so you look at the comments and see a lot of positive ones. So you keep watching. Mesmerized by the presenter’s wisdom, you start taking notes and figure out how to do keyword research.

And throughout the time you spent learning how to do keyword research, you learned how to do it using our tools.

So not only have you been exposed to our brand and products numerous times through free content, you’ve now been brought into our ecosystem through various searches simply because we were there when you needed us. So naturally, you’d be more inclined to purchase our tools because you’ve been educated on them. Content marketing helps to creates awareness and attracts potential customers to your content. Your content engages them and builds credibility for your brand, it converts visitors into customers, it allows you to build a loyal following. And for a software product like ours, it helps retain customers because they learn how to do new things with our tools leading to increased usage.

Best of all, your revenue compounds because unlike advertising where your ads stop appearing the minute you stop paying, content that surfaces where and when your customers are searching, is consistent. And it’s important to note that no matter how good your content is, if your products aren’t up to scratch, then content won’t save you at least for the long haul. So with all the flexing out of the way, let’s talk about how you can do this for your business. Now, the two main parts of content marketing is to create content and distribute or promote it.

And whatever you create, should have the goal of attracting and/or retaining customers.

Let’s talk about the content creation side of things. Your content can be in various formats. So that might be blog posts, podcasts, videos, online courses, infographics, free tools, templates, ebooks, checklists, you name it. As long as there’s demand from your target audience for that type of content then pretty much anything is fair game. Now, the type of content you choose will depend on the topic of your content piece.

For example, a recipe would work well as a blog post and video, but it probably wouldn’t be great as a podcast. Whereas an interview with Gordan Ramsay could work as a podcast, video or even blog post, but it probably wouldn’t be very valuable as a checklist. As a general rule of thumb, start with one format that work for you and rinse and repeat. Then, consider exploring another channel. For us, we started with blog posts and then eventually branched out to videos as our team grew.

Now, creating content alone isn’t enough because content isn’t the same as content marketing. And unfortunately, the notion of “if you build it and they will come” couldn’t be further from the truth. And that’s why it’s important to have an idea of where you’ll be distributing this content. Some common distribution channels would include search which can be done through search engine optimization or paid ads, social media networks, forums and communities or email newsletters. For example, if you have a recipes site, then you’d probably want to optimize your content for Google search, YouTube and/or Pinterest because these are channels where lots of people are actively looking for recipes every month.

Now, if you have a site on golf, you might want to consider YouTube, Google Search, and forums and communities because these are all places where your target audience would actively be looking for information on the topic. Again, a general rule of thumb would be to pick 2 to 3 networks to work on and get really good at them.

For Ahrefs, our two main content distribution channels are Google search via. SEO and YouTube. And our website get over a million visits from Google Search every month and had nearly 600,000 views on YouTube in March.

And because these are two channels we’ve been able to get great results from, let’s spend the rest of our time on how to create and promote content on these channels. Let’s talk about blog content first. The two most popular distribution channels will be social media and search. When you create content with social media as your primary distribution channel, you’re taking on a lot of risk. Getting your blog content to blow up on social media is very unpredictable.

And while there are tools that can help you see how many times a post gets shared, you don’t know why they were shared. I mean, did they do outreach to get influencers to share their content? Do the creators of that content already have large existing audiences? Or are all of these shares fake because they were purchased to inflate popularity? There are way too many variables which is one of the reasons why we stay away from trying to create “viral” type content.

Plus, social media traffic tends to start with a big spike, but it ends up flatlining, leaving your content dead in the water. As for SEO traffic, it’s much easier to create predictable and consistent results that will stand the test of time. And there are 3 basic steps to this process. The first step is to find topics that are relevant to your business. And this step is often referred to as keyword research.

To get started, use a keyword research tool like Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer and enter some topics that are broadly related to your niche. So assuming you have a site that sells an online course on parenting, you might search for “parenting” and “toddler.” Next, go to the Questions report, which will show you keywords phrased as questions as well as the search volume for those keywords. And questions are often problems that your target audience may be facing.

Now, since we’re selling an online course, you’ll want to look for topics that are closely or at least somewhat related to your product.

So something like, “how to discipline a toddler” might be a good fit since you sell a parenting course. The next step is to create the “right” type of content. Google tries to surface the most relevant content for any given query. So the “right” type of content from an SEO perspective, is one that meets the searchers needs.

This is called search intent, which represents the reason behind a searcher’s query.

And you can determine this by looking at the top-ranking results or if you’re using Keywords Explorer, you can hit the SERP button to see the top 10 pages along with their SEO metrics. In this case, they’re all informational blog posts where many have gone with the “tactical” angle. So you’d probably want to go this route too to have a fighting chance at ranking.

And the last step is to promote your content. Promotion can take many forms and it’s best if you go with an inside out approach, meaning, start with channels closest to you and then move outwards to reach new audiences.

So you might start by posting on your social media accounts and sending new content to your email newsletter. Then you may want to branch out to communities you’re involved in.

...

That might be Reddit, Quora, or social groups that allow link sharing. And finally, you’ll want to do some blogger outreach to get backlinks. And this is what you’ll need to do to get your pages ranking higher on Google.

Now, we’ve only scratched the surface here with Google SEO, so if you want to learn more, then check out the playlist in our description to our completely free SEO training course where you can learn how to get organic traffic from search month over month. As for YouTube content, there are three main ways we select topics for content. The first way is for YouTube organic search views. To do that, go to Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer, select the YouTube tab to get YouTube search data, and enter a broad keyword related to your niche. Next, go to the Phrase match report.

Now, since YouTube content is almost always informational you can skim this report and look for relevant keywords to your business. For example, “parenting styles” might be interesting because again, our hypothetical site sells an online course on parenting. And people searching for this would probably be interested in it. So I’ll take that keyword and type it into YouTube search.

Again, I’ll look at the top 3 videos and see if there are any commonalities and do my best to create a video that matches searcher intent.

We have a full video on doing YouTube SEO which has been a major factor in our channel’s growth, so I’ll link that up in the description. The second way is to create content on unique topics that might draw in your target audience. Now, the reason why we do this is because YouTube is both a search and social platform. And because there is that “social” aspect to YouTube, their algorithm rewards videos that attract a lot of clicks that lead to high watch times. So by creating content on a popular topic in your niche that no one else has really talked about, you can potentially get a ton of clicks and if your content is good enough, people will watch it for long periods of time, leading to YouTube promoting your content to similar audiences.

Now, coming up with your own ideas will come down to creativity. But a simple formula you can use is [main topic] plus [main attractor]. For example, we created this video called “Link Building with Google Ads.” Our main topic is “link building,” which is a popular SEO strategy. And the main attractor is “with Google ads.

” And that’s because no one was really talking about how to use Google ads to actually get backlinks to your site. So we created our own case study where we shared all of the details with complete transparency. And the third way is to create a series. Series work well because they’re meant to be watched in sequential order. This can lead to overall longer watch times across your entire channel.

And the longer people are watching your content, the more YouTube will promote your videos.

But the biggest benefit is that if your content integrates your offerings in an organic way, there’s a significant amount of exposure to your products. For example, our SEO for beginners course teaches how to do SEO and naturally, we use both our free and paid tools in it. And this series has accumulated well over 10,000 hours of watch time in under 2 months. To put this into perspective, that’s about 426.

6 days or 1.17 years of continuous content consumption. So potential series ideas might be courses, case studies, building something in public, or if you want to go with more of an entertainment angle, vlogs and shows work well too, depending on your niche. Now, as for the promotion side of things, YouTube does a great job at promoting relevant content on their homepage and sidebar suggestions. But if you don’t have an existing audience, it can be tough to get that initial traction.

I won’t get into that here because we have full tutorials on how to get more views on YouTube when you’re just starting out as well as a video on how to get more subscribers, which will teach you a lot about how YouTube works.

Again, links in description. Now, content marketing isn’t exactly a fast process. It’s an ongoing one. And I think this is why people often avoid it because we’re used to this idea of immediate results, so we turn to things like advertising and direct mail.

And, there’s nothing wrong with more traditional methods of marketing, but content marketing is unique in the sense that it continues to contribute to your bottom line over time. So I want you to think of content marketing like planting seeds. If you want to grow an apple tree, it can take up to 8 years for it to bear fruit. But that same tree will continually put food on the table for years to come. And the longer you wait to plant that seed, the longer it’ll take to start reaping the rewards.

So if SEO interests you, then I highly recommend taking our free SEO course for beginners. Or if YouTube is the channel you want to focus on, then check out our playlist on YouTube marketing. And if you enjoyed this video, make sure to like, share, and subscribe for more actionable marketing videos like this one. I’ll see you in the next tutorial..

How to Beat Your Competition in Blogging

– Video is going to be the future. It’s much more interactive. You can do step by step. You still need to do text-based content, but now you have to do omni-channel. You have to do podcasts, video and text.

You can’t just do one anymore. See blogging is much more competitive. There’s over a billion blogs. That’s roughly one blog for every seven people in this world. You need to do more than just create a blog.

You need to do the video content. You need to do a bit of everything if you want to do well now. (upbeat music) Before we get started, make sure you subscribe to this channel, and if you’re on YouTube, click the alert notification. – No introduction needed Neil. Everyone knows about you, how you are doing and how popular you are in India, and literally it’s been pleasure.

I was teasing since very long to make up this interview. Finally, we did it, but literally we’ll take some questions. So Neil, one of our like team member here, he’s asking how to write content. So that use it, stick with it, which is also called pogo sticking. – So with content, few things, one, write in a conversational tone, use you and I.

Keep your paragraphs roughly five, six lines max. Use subheadings so it makes it easier to skim. Hook people into the introduction with a bold statement, and of course, a question, so they keep reading more. Wrap your conclusion up with the question to help increase engagement and comments, but following that should help. – What is the biggest failure in SEO as, Neil Patel, in past time?

– The biggest failure for SEO The biggest failure It’s been like 15 years you are doing into like content marketing, blogging.

– The biggest pillar I would say is when I first started off, I would do too many things that were shortsighted. I used to try doing things like buying links and cheating Google and looking for loopholes instead of trying to provide value to people, the readers, and if I did that, I would be much further off in my career. Don’t look for shortcuts. Do what’s best for your audience.

Don’t be shortsighted, and that was a huge mistake of mine.

– Well, great. I’m just finding questions and questions. Can you say a little bit about Indian audience? How they’re reacting to your SEO point of view.

How India will be the great market in future in terms of blogging and content generation and getting more traffic from India. – It already is. India is a fast growing market. Looking at companies like Flipkart, right? You just have to be patient, give it time, but there’s a ton of money to be made in India.

As long as you’re a patient, there are so many people there there’s good volume in SEO. Again, you just have to give it a few years. Specifically with India that we found is marketing will pick up more and more as more people adopt credit cards. Because right now in India, everything is COD, right? – Yeah – But I think that’ll change in the next five 10 years, maybe I’m wrong but I think it’ll start changing and more and more people will have credit cards.

– Yeah. I’ve seen in one of your videos, like you were saying like Indian people have money, but they put that money the side of their pillow and they sleep. So what was that? – What we mean by that is in India. Although there’s taxes, a lot of Indians don’t pay taxes.

They try to, by saying putting underneath the pillow is saying like there’s a lot of cash money going around in India. In which it’s not all bank account money. So a lot of Indians have more money than people think. – Yeah. Great.

– They do well in America, most people don’t know this but Indians have the highest median income in the United States. – Well, Neil, most important question people generally ask in India, like how to get backlinks, naturally, as you have mentioned so many strategies and tactics.

So what are your thoughts about how we’ll get naturally backlinks for our blog posts? So what are your words on this? Yeah.

Infographics is one of the best ways. If you create good images and infographics you can get a ton of back links over time naturally. I would highly recommend a lot more people creating. – So only infographics are the thing or some other techniques. – Other ways, but it’s the best way, and in India, you can get them generated for much more affordable than what we pay here.

– Yeah. So, Neil, I want to ask one question. People generally face in their day-to-day life. Like if you were ranking on second page of Google for certain keyword, how you will make up to the first space in first third, three positions, what will be your strategy? How you’ll do and boost your ranking from second to first page.

So one, I would look at all the content for the people in the top 10 and try to look what differences their content versus mine, and make mine more thorough. I would use tools like Ubersuggest and put in the keyword that I’m ranking for and find all the long tail versions and put that in there as well. Cause that’s extra traffic that I could be getting, and then what I would do is use the link intersect tool from Atrius because you can see who links to people in the top 10, but not you, and then hit those people up and ask them to link to your page as well. – Yeah. Great, Neil.

So I want to ask one personal question, if you don’t mind. So Neil, have you been to India? Yeah.

So any plans for future, if you are visiting India, I mean. – Have no plans at the moment but I do want to come back, you know, soon again.

– People are really excited. They’re dying to see you here in India. – I love India. I want to end up paying a company there but I haven’t found the right business partner yet in India. So that way I can create a educational company.

I want to get my own mini university where I teach people all the latest marketing. – That is great. That is great. – In person, though. Not just online.

– Yeah. So Neil, I just want to ask one question like what will be the future of text-based content? What are your thoughts? – I think text is good, but video is going to be the future. It’s much more interactive.

You can do step-by-step you still need to do text-based content, but now you have to omni-channel you have to do podcasts, video and texts.

You can’t just do one anymore. See blogging as much more competitive. There’s over a billion blogs. That’s roughly one blog for every seven people in this world.

You need to do more than just create a blog. You need to do the video content. You needed a bit of everything if you want to do well now. – Yeah. Neil, I just want one more question.

In terms of like, people they ask me. He asked like how page layout effect site ranking? – Yeah. Page layout affects it very well, because if you don’t internal link, if it doesn’t load fast. Cross-linking is very important.

Making sure the text is easy to read and people can get to it right away and digest the content.

All that stuff impacts rankings cause if the users scores are bad, then you’re not going to do well. – Yeah. Perfect. Neil.

I’ve seen so many people are doing that wrong practices. They are making bad links for your blog. So is there bad links like links from on websites or they may affect your ranking? As you mentioned that now-a-days Google becomes very smart and it won’t calculate or count those links. – Yeah.

Google’s very smart at it. I wouldn’t worry about getting, you know, link building I wouldn’t worry about it as much. You need to build links, but keep in mind, Google looks at so many more metrics now. I would focus on creating the best product. Like if you look at Ubersuggest the SEO tool, have you used?

– Yeah.

When I was not using paid tools, I was using Ubersuggest, but nowadays I’m seeing like you are upgrading Ubersuggest and it’s like it’s going to be in the competition of (indistinct) If I’m not wrong. – And it’s free. So think about it by building a good product. That tool has over 9,000 backlinks.

So if you create good stuff, you’ll naturally get them. You don’t have to worry about penalties or building or any of that. Just focus on building really cool stuff. – Yeah. So, Nate, what are your plans like if you don’t mind.

– My plans are at least an Ubersuggest in the next 45 days I’m releasing a feature where you can put in a URL and it tells you all the traffic stats, backlinks, rankings top pages, all that kind of stuff. How to increase CTR for high rankings, put the Keyword closer to the front have a very appealing title, as well as meta-description look at magazines, look at their titles. It’ll give you ideas on what people want to click. It’s not just about putting keywords.

It’s about making it appealing.

How to enlist base titles still do very well. Things that evoke curiosity like The Seven Benefits of Green Tea, Number six will shock you. Everyone’s going to be like, what is number six? So using some of those things will help you increase how many clicks you’re getting. – Tell me a little bit.

I want to ask like personal stuff. I want a you have written blog posts already. You have shared your, everything you need about SEO blogging, video, marketing, content, marketing, everything. This I need to ask. Literally, I want to chat a little bit about your personal stuff.

How you manage your time is like you are doing so many things at a time. Like you are generating, you are creating. producing video content as well text content as well, podcasting as well. So, and you are managing your clients as well. So how you are managing your time?

How you are like very busy man? – So yeah I have a big team. So the team helps. So like Curtis, he helped set up this interview. We have a huge team like Mike, my co-founder.

He goes into the office each day helps with the team. We have amazing executives like guy named Nick Rashaun or Jeff Johnson, and there’s so many people on our team who just help out. – So we have seen your quick Q&A Thursday. So how that thought comes into your mind, like let’s do Q&A Thursday and we’ll answer, let’s answer some questions. How is it?

– It was this random idea. We just like, oh, let’s try this out – For YouTube only. So how you get more views? What to do to get more views on YouTube? – Yeah.

So a one put the keywords in your title and description, use tools like Ubersuggest to find the right keywords. Three, when you release a video promote it right away to your Twitter, your any social channels, email it out. Use a push notification. The other thing I would end up doing too with your YouTube videos is attractive thumbnail where people would want to click and you want to continually ask questions and increase engagement. So if you tell people to ask questions or leave a comment that really helps boost your videos as well.

That’ll help you get more browse and suggested traffic. – Yeah. So Neil. We just – You do well on YouTube though, no? You have a few hundred thousand subscribers in India.

Is that right? – Yeah. I have more than 200K subscribers in India and really it’s been like two years. I’m on YouTube and it’s growing, – And how do you make money on YouTube in India.

...

Ads?

– Yeah. YouTube ads and like AdSense sponsorships. Likewise. I make money and I do have clients in India. Yeah.

So let’s ask some personal questions. We’ll ask two or three personal questions. Neil how you celebrated your Christmas? – Just celebrated with family, opened up presents, and I worked a lot as well. – Yeah.

We know you work a lot, Neil. So how was your New Year? Like earlier? We should do the interview because of some reasons it can’t happen but how you celebrated your New Year and in 2019 what are your plans? And what will we see new in 2019 from Neil Patel.

– Yeah. So New Year’s Day or Eve, or I didn’t do much. I stayed in, as for my New Year’s plan. I’m going to release more features with Ubersuggest. Keep growing the companies and I’m going to be producing much more video content.

– Yeah. Great. Like you mentioned in one of your video, I’ve seen like you said, focus more on promoting your text content. Our lady was posting like random on in a week two or three blog posts, but currently you are posting only one blog post in a week.

I think.

So if I’m not wrong. – Correct. – So new blogger or a blogger they are doing. What they can do, like they should focus more on promotions or creating content. – Promotions.

See right now there’s so many blogs and content. I would write new content. I’m jet lagged. I would write new content, like new stuff that people haven’t seen or read because the web is just so saturated with texts now, and then I would spend majority of the time promoting versus writing five 10 blog posts a week, write one and promote one. – Yeah.

So if I’ll ask, what are your techniques or what are your strategies where to promote and how to promote a text-based content. – Email, everyone who links out to competing blog posts ask them to share your content or link to you, look to see who shared all the other content like using Twitter to see who shared people’s content. If someone asked them to share your content, anyone that you link out to you in your blog posts, email them ask them to share content.

Those are the main promotion strategies I use. So what about Quora?

So what do you quote about Quora? – I released a blog post today and I mentioned Quora early on in the blog post. You know, anytime it’s relevant to any of the popular questions, I always add a link but it doesn’t drive as much traffic as people think. – So Quora is a bad platform for promoting your content and engaging with people. – Not the best but it is a good platform.

– Yeah. Good platform. Okay. Neil. I want to ask this question is from my side only how social media can help a brand to grow organic or paid.

So what are the mediums? – Yeah, both work. As long as paid as profitable, you should do as much as possible of it, but when it comes to social media, what I recommend people do is focus on creating amazing content. Whether you’re a brand or individual, it’s the content, and most people don’t create amazing content.

That’s where they really struggle if it’s not doing well.

A lot of times it’s not because the algorithms are tough it’s because the content is not as amazing as people would want or expect. – So Neil, how you were preparing for SEO in 2019? – 2019, I’m writing less and focusing more on tools because it builds backlinks faster and more organically. I’m focusing more on video content and video SEO over text-based SEO because I think it’s wide open.

What else am I doing in 2019?

– Voice search – I’m doing a lot with voice search. I’ve been doing that in 2018, a ton. I’ll be doing more voice search in 2019. Cause I think it’s going to be popular and I’m heavy on mobile, right? As well, because more and more people in B2B are using mobile as well.

– Yeah. Great, Neil.

Which tool you use majorly for your business in daily day-to-day life, which tools you use? – Gmail, Google analytics, Ubersuggest, Slack, Skype. Those are the main tools both.

– Okay. So ask your opinion which is better YouTube or Facebook watch? – I prefer YouTube. – YouTube. Yeah.

Great. Neil, one of my friends, he’s like a marketer Facebook, ad expert. So he’s asking, he told me to ask to Neil how to create a stability in results? You have to build a brand. So if you want stable results, not fluctuate as much.

Google ranks brands higher than non brands. So you got to take an omni-channel approach from podcasting to videos or creating text-based content to creating amazing product or amazing service to helping people out, to responding to every comment, to being on the social web, by doing everything you’ll build a brand over time, and what you’ll find is as your brand queries grow, so do your ranking.

They stay more stable and they grow as well. – So Neil, I want to ask last, last question. So overthinking and overdoing.

So how to reduce overthinking and how to become more productive as Neil’s thought how we can do. – Yeah. So overthinking, overdoing, you just go and you execute don’t think too much and don’t worry and don’t worry about the fine details. Just go and do it and learn as you go along. There’s nothing wrong with that.

That’s how most people got started. That’s how I got started, and it works well. – So Neil, how, how you earn your first income, what you sold or how you had your first income? First income was picking up trash and cleaning restrooms. So that’s how I earned my first, you know, dollar.

– Yeah, I’ve read your biography, and it was like amazing. I felt like once, one last my personal thought a personal story. I want to share with you, Neil. Once I was into my office and I was reading your blog posts I was very fascinated about your course at that time there was your coats, like on digital marketing or something kind of thing.

I was reading your whole blog posts.

I was so much excited that I have to buy this course. I have to spend a thousand dollars and have to go. I called my father that I want to buy your course, and I want to be like Neil Patel. I was passionate about digital marketing and everything. So I asked, I think I mailed you as well that please remain the price at thousand dollars only.

Don’t increase. So I was thinking, but anyhow, I was very, really excited that I have to buy that course because it was like copywriting, you know, copywriting. I think that works very well, and I was like really excited to buy that course. So it was great. – Awesome.

– I have, you tried learning Hindi. Hindi is like much popular in India, and like, your name is also Patel. Indian people means they relate to you. It’s like a one stop. Digital marketer is Neil Patel, and it’s like Indian name.

Indian brand. You look like Indian. So I, I haven’t learned Hindi. It’s not that popular in America because everyone’s here speaks English. I know Gujarati though.

– Gujarati, you know? – Yeah. – I don’t think know Gujarati. Can you speak a little bit about what you do with Gujarati? Like people will really like your wordings and your speed.

– Yeah. I can talk fluently in Gujarati.

(speaking Gujarati) Like I just said My name is Neil, right? But because I grew up with my parents speaking Gujarati. – But yeah.

I don’t know Hindi. They only taught me Gujarati. – Yeah. It’s great. Neil.

What do you like to eat? Like what are your favorite dishes and everything? People want to know. – Indian food is my favorite. I still eat a chicken tikka masala.

I love garlic naan. I love Chole. Pani Puri. Ya know there’s a lot of dishes. A little bit, little bit personal your kids, they don’t they’ve never told you like Papa let’s visit to India or – I’ve been to India before many times.

I just haven’t gone recently because I’ve been busy. I’ve been to India before. – Yeah. So Neil, I just want to last last question. When I approached you for this interview what are your thinking?

What are your thoughts about me? Like I’m an Indian or I’m into Hindi videos and let’s do this interview. What are your thoughts? I want to know I want to share with my audience as well. – Yeah.

Why not? I just said, yeah, why not? It would be fun, and it was fun. It’s my pleasure. I was in front of you.

I’ve interviewed you, I’ve asked some, literally so many questions and you answered very fluently in English and you are like really very humble guy. Goodbye. So Neil, it was like, bye-bye. Take care. Thanks for having me.

Google Search News (June ‘21) – Search Console Insights (BETA), RSS, and more!

[MUSIC PLAYING] JOHN MUELLER: Hi, everyone, and welcome back to the “Google Search News.” I hope life is treating you reasonably well, wherever you are. I’m your host today, John Mueller, here from Google Switzerland. With this show, we want to give you a regular summary of what’s been happening around Google Search, specifically for website owners, publishers, and SEOs. If you find these useful, which I hope you do, and if you’d like to stay up to date, make sure to subscribe to the channel.

It’s good to see you all again. I have a bunch of updates for you today. They include core web vitals, Search Console, RSS, and a lot more. So without further ado, let’s jump right in. Let’s start off with core web vitals and the page experience ranking change.

We mentioned this last time, too, so I’ll be brief. This is a new ranking change, which takes into account the user experience of web pages.

It includes elements like HTTPS, as well as aspects around speed and responsiveness. The announced changes, such as the updated cumulative layout shift, or CLS for short, are now live in all of the testing tools and in Search Console. Keep in mind that the data in Search Console is based on the Chrome user experience report data, which is aggregated over 28 days.

Another update is that the ranking change has just recently started rolling out. It’s aimed at being fully rolled out for all URLs by the end of August this year. In practice, this slower update means that you would usually not see your whole site shift in search visibility from one day to the next.

...

Instead, you’d see a gradual change over time. This also means you can continue to work on improving things if your site isn’t doing as well as you’d like in terms of these metrics.

There are a lot of details and specifics that folks might be interested in. For that, we have an expanded FAQ in our help forum. I’ll link to all of this below. And now over to Search Console. Google Search Console is a fantastic way of finding out how your website is doing with regards to Google Search.

After verifying your website there, you can get lots of information.

For example, where and how are people finding your website? Are there any issues you could resolve to make your site easier to find? All of that and more. Last time, we talked about regex.

That functionality was so well received that the team expanded on it and has recently launched negative regex. It gives you all of the information that doesn’t match what you provided, and that’s a positive thing. For example, you could use a regex to cover all variations of your brand’s name, and then see all queries that didn’t mention the name.

This is a way of splitting branded search terms from unbranded. So plus one for negative regex, if you ask me.

Then we recently launched Search Console insights. Search Console and Google Analytics give a fantastic amount of information, but it can be a bit too much if you don’t have time to regularly understand what it all means. Search Console insights distills this information down and give site owners a nice and easy overview of what’s been happening with regards to their site. If you work as an SEO or for an agency, this is a neat way of helping any less savvy site owners to see how your work has helped their site. It’s still super fresh, so I’d recommend checking it out.

Think about how you might use it, and point folks there who don’t want to research numbers in the mountains of data in Search Console and Analytics. Let’s move on to RSS. RSS is the name of a specially formatted XML file, or feed. It’s commonly used for syndicating information. It’s been traditionally used to provide information about new blog posts and articles to subscribers.

Some might say RSS is not new, but it was recently mentioned at Google I/O, the big Google developer conference, so let’s take a brief look. We use RSS feeds similarly to [INAUDIBLE] files to help us optimize our crawling, and to make sure we don’t miss any updates on a website. This remains unchanged. Additionally, at I/O, we mentioned that we’re going to start using them in the context of a follow button in Chrome. This would allow users to receive updates from your website directly in their browsers.

This is independent of Search.

This Chrome experiment will first be visible in English in the US in Chrome on Android. If your website is already producing RSS feeds, you may already be prepared. As usual, these feeds should be linked from the head of your pages. One aspect to mention is that the title of your feed may be visible to users, so it’s a good practice to check that it’s a useful representation of what the feed provides.

To speed up delivery of updates, we recommend using WebSub, which we also support for Search.

I’m curious to see how this works out. I hope we have more news to share on this once it expands from the experimental stages. Woo, so many things to think about when it comes to making websites. If you’re just getting started on SEO or if you’re keen on diving into specific topics, I recently ran across a fantastic website by Aleyda Solis which can help you out.

It’s called learningseo.io. It’s an amazingly comprehensive way of getting an overview of all of the information already published about SEO. You can find a learning path that works for you, or just be amazed at how many fantastic articles folks have written on certain topics. Aleyda does a fantastic job of curating this, so the information you find there will be useful and relevant.

I recommend bookmarking that and checking in when you’re keen on working yourself into another facet of SEO. And now for a bunch of smaller updates.

The latest core update was announced early June, and there’s another plan for July. These are updates to the core of our Search systems, so you may see changes in how your site is shown in Search. We have a blog post with more information about these updates, which I’ll link to below.

Google I/O took place at the end of May. There were lots of sessions with videos. You can find them all on the Google I/O website. At I/O, we also announced MUM and other machine learning technologies. SEOs have asked if this is the end of SEO.

The shorter answer is no. These modern tools make it easier for you to do your jobs, and the specific activities will evolve. For example, there will be less, fewer, or reduced need to include all possible synonyms, or words that mean the same or similar. We recently launched a shared location for all content policies around Search. This should make it easier for you to find any specific policy that you’re looking for.

And then, we recently unlaunched the generic rich results search appearance type in Search Console.

This makes it a bit easier for you to focus on the bigger picture. And last, but definitely not least, we’re doing a survey. You should find a link right here. The survey is about our video content, and I’d really appreciate to hear from you to find out more about what we could do to better support you and your work.

That’s all for now, folks. Thank you for watching this episode. It always feels good to me to look back at the last two months and pull together the things that really stood out. I hope you found it useful and insightful as well. If there are elements you’d like to have covered differently, please let me know in the comments below or drop me a note on Twitter.

Looking around, it seems like summer is finally coming. Well, at least on this side of the planet. While it’s impossible to know for sure, it feels like things are also slowly getting a little bit better in terms of the coronavirus.

I hope the outlook is looking positive for you, your family, and those around you as well. If you’d like to see more of these episodes, make sure to subscribe to the channel.

We’re regularly publishing new videos here. I’m sure there’s something coming up which you’ll appreciate as well. And, as always, I look forward to seeing you all again in one of the future episodes of “Google Search News.” Bye. [MUSIC PLAYING] .

How to Find Unlimited New Customers Using Artificial Intelligence (Marketing Secrets)

so the idea was really simple it’s like what if we built like google display network or facebook audience network for screens in the real world um so

we we built like a prototype for that and then we did what we kind of hatching called a reverse stealth mode we called everybody in the out of

home advertising industry which is tvs and bars and restaurants but it’s also ads in airports or billboards mass transit wrapped cars all this basically

everything that you see outside of your home um and it’s a 31 billion dollar industry that is the most archaic thing that i have ever seen my name is kevin david and if you want real financial freedom for yourselves and for your loved

ones today then the time is now and i will be there to help you every step of the way what is up guys and welcome back to another exciting episode of the kevin david experience um big shout out to everybody who’s been

leaving comments engaging with our brand new youtube channel we just started actually launching it on our big youtube channel as well as our new clips podcast channel so huge shout out to everybody who’s been supporting us there and a big shout out for everybody who supports us on

itunes or spotify or wherever you listen so thank you everybody who has been doing that and one other big thank you is the people who are actually sharing the podcast it means a lot to us um so today we have a special guest i know i always say that because it’s always true um sam who is joining us and told me he hasn’t actually gone to the barber in a year which is great so

you guys have to go to youtube to check out how sexy his beard looks so sam the first question we ask everybody on the podcast is kind of to describe um you know your entrepreneurial journey all the way up until right now uh in 60 seconds or less uh it’s a series of accidents uh i was hosting an am fm talk radio show about cigars at a bunch in tampa a bunch of cigar

folks wanted me to build websites for them which was fine but then they wanted me to help them make money with it which i didn’t know how to do so i hopped on google found this company called hubspot uh they had some pretty cool stuff i thought they’d be a cool team to work with but uh i was a college dropout with no experience so they’re a bunch of harvard and mit

nerds i built a landing page at hiremeethubspot.com to register for the free webinar on why you should hire me and then i use the free credits you get when you sign up with google facebook linkedin to run ads targeting their employees um i was in hospital for eight years ran hubspot labs uh ran our expansion lat am then i lived in a van for a year uh speaking uh on hubspot

behalf i was teaching at harvard taught at usf which is the school i dropped out of which was fun um then after eight years the hubspot execs helped me you know it’s time for me to move on uh found a new role uh chief foreign officer flock.com and then uh after flock um yeah accidentally launched

onescreen.ai which is where i am now i love that it’s so funny because you like so casually mentioned that you like you know uh targeted their employees with like ads and made like a landing page like basically like getting them to hire you like most people probably wouldn’t do that right

...

but that was like normal to you i mean if if you do what everyone else does you get what everyone else gets right and hubspot rejected most of their applicants and i was unqualified anyways at least on paper so when you know you’re you’re likely to fail it really frees you up to be more innovative

yeah that’s interesting and so you literally made like a website you made uh you were targeting them and so like were there employees actually seeing that did you like find their emails from some like source and then like upload

like a custom audience basically on on google and facebook that was like only targeting them or how did you do it this is way before all of that was an option um the so hubspot only had about 100 employees or so at the time so

i targeted everybody who liked the hubspot page and lived in boston uh which was you know they were a small company um and i did the linkedin stuff and then i did everybody who was googling the hubspot brand name

um to and also lived in boston because back then you had to check search rankings manually so i just sort of created coverage but um yeah it it only took me three hours and 26 minutes to get a call from the recruiter when i hit go i got leads for about a third of the company so it worked well that is

literally hilarious and so then you said you’re the chief revenue officer at a a company called what was it flock yeah flock.com um it was a really interesting startup out of uh out of india and the ceo um asked me if i wanted to take on google microsoft facebook and slack at the same time

with like an all-in-one uh collaboration and communication suite for mid-sized businesses that sounds familiar it’s because it was hubspot’s playbook um it was you know i’d always had an agreement with the hubspot founders and exec team that if i decided i wanted to leave that they’d help me find a

new role uh and so uh kip who was the cmo at hubspot was an advisor for this company um and uh he he introduced me to them and yeah i was there for about a year and a half and uh they’re they’re still cranking along they’re

still still doing really well there um but then obviously when when covet hit i got to lay off myself and and a few other people uh which was an interesting

experience but right and so what what ended up happening with with hubspot did you just kind of like were you kind of tired of of the role that you had or did you just kind of want to you know pursue other things or what did that look like um i wanted to go back to an early stage startup uh i like you know working with uh smaller teams i like being more agile and and you

know you start thinking in terms of years i was doing a lot of strategy planning for hubspot at the time which which was a lot of fun but um you know i wanted to i didn’t i knew i didn’t want to teach full-time at harvard or anything i i wanted to do work not talk about it um and so yeah we literally

created a trello board i had a freelancer uh create a prospecting list for every tech startup that was post series b and pre-ipo that didn’t have a cmo or cro uh and then uh added all of the hubspot execs and some other folks to a trello board where we sorted them by very professional categories of pretty

cool really cool and insanely cool um and then we just you know worked the network until we found which ones uh i thought i should talk to so it was um yeah it was it was just i wanted to go back to an earlier stage startup and it’s

now that i’m back at an early stage startup i’m questioning my sanity um but you know it’s uh it was it’s it’s fun i like it what do you what do you think the difference is between working at someone else’s startup that they founded

versus founding your own um the the breadth of pressure is a lot different right a defining characteristic of startups is there’s always more problems

than there are people and then there are bandwidth but when you’re not one of the founders and especially when you’re not the ceo the your job is to stay focused right if you whoever chases two ravage cass catches neither right even if you need both to survive you can still only chase one at a time

um i don’t know how i let my co-founders talk me into being the ceo because they all have these like narrowly scoped areas of responsibilities for either sales or engineering and then everything else either gets ignored or uh you know ends up being a problem that i have to solve like i i learned

about hr this uh you know last year which was fun yeah being like a being like a startup founder i feel like you have to be like the ceo the cmo the ceo the you know cfo head of hr yeah yeah it’s it’s an interesting experience i feel like you know there’s always pros and cons i feel like with

entrepreneurship now everyone’s kind of like really um like glamorized being like an entrepreneur and a founder right but like nobody ever really talks about like the negative aspects and like the pressure of like being

responsible for other people’s lives and things like that one thing that you said that was that was interesting is like you you just casually say these things that i think are really unique like which is a it’s a good attribute but

you said like you made like a a list of like every startup that like didn’t have like a ceo or a cmo or whatever like one of the questions that will that i’ll ask you in a bit we do like a rapid fire session so i guess i’ll just ask it now like what do you do when you’re feeling overwhelmed or you’re feeling like you

don’t know where to start it seems like you do like what i do which is like you create like really detailed well-thought-out lists but i’d be interested to hear you know your thoughts on on how you kind of approach uh problems

or or you know when you’re when you’re feeling like you don’t know what to do like what do you do uh when i feel like i don’t know what to do it’s

usually because there’s too much to do there’s too many options uh i don’t usually run into you know i don’t i literally don’t know where to begin or how to approach or solve a situation because you just take like the next step that you know about um my my biggest thing is the best life advice comes from

airline safety videos which is secure your own mass before assisting others it doesn’t mean you don’t care about like the baby in the seat next to you but whoever is relying on you can’t is screwed if you can’t breathe um so you

know even with the team right now it’s like solve one problem at a time don’t solve problems you don’t have yet uh and just be okay with the fact that you have to like take things like you can scope it out into a big list but then you

have to take it in chunks um so i i generally think about the entire problem and then i categorize literally things that we’re going to ignore that we know

strategy playbook omissions and timeline and targets uh the omissions is like stuff we know matters but we have all jointly agreed we’re not gonna actually work on right now yeah yeah and i think that’s interesting that i was recently reading a book that that mentioned um maslow’s hierarchy of fires

which is kind of like it’s kind of like which fires you like prioritize similar to like your you know baseline needs as a human like shelter and you know

food things like that but kind of in like the opposite twist because you know with startups or life in general right there’s always going to be more

problems than you kind of have to solve and so like one important part of like prioritizing is not only prioritizing what to do but prioritizing like what not to do also which i think a lot of people kind of get wrong and so what

what about one screen can you tell us like and you know to uh to a layman or somebody who doesn’t know as much about marketing as as we do that

what exactly does one screen actually do what’s the problem it solves yeah so again one screen was an accident um at the end when kova was starting uh we knew a bunch of small businesses were going to be screwed and so a

few hubspot colleagues we got together for just a hackathon to try and help small businesses and we’re sitting in a cigar lounge in boston and the tv’s turned off but even it’s turned on it’s showing commercials but the

commercials suck and the business isn’t getting any money for it so the idea was really simple it’s like what if we built like google display network or facebook audience network for screens in the real world um so we built like

a prototype for that and then we did what we kind of hatching they called a reverse stealth mode we called everybody in the out of home advertising industry um which is tvs and bars and restaurants but it’s also ads in airports

or billboards mass transit wrapped cars all this basically everything that you see outside of your home um and it’s a 31 billion dollar industry that is the most archaic thing that i have ever seen uh there’s no like directory of who

owns all the billboards and like where they are like if you just wanted to buy every billboard within 50 miles of tampa you wouldn’t be able to without calling 100 companies uh and so we decided to uh yeah like quit all of our jobs and and see if we could due to real world media what you know google

did to the internet which is organize the information and make it useful and then do what amazon did for the buying experience right like you should be able to just buy everything that you need all in one place um and it’s weird

because i had only bought billboards once in my career i’m sorry twice and once was just to piss off a competitor um but now like i love it because i wish i had known all these things were options right like there’s so many cool things that you can do beyond just like a b testing another set of copy

for your google adwords campaigns right like we’re all tired of that that’s that’s so like when you i mean first of all that’s a great idea right because like there’s so many like lounges and things that just have like broken tvs or

like they have some like goofy ad that no one has any idea what it is or like even like 24 hour fitness like theirs are like run by them and it’s still goofy

like um so it’s a it’s a great idea how do you actually like approach that right because that’s a very big problem so i mean you know are you calling all these businesses are you trying to like basically make it so easy self sign up that the businesses are incentivized monetarily to actually do it themselves

like what’s the approach that that you take um you know to kind of try to get businesses to sign up and then to both because it’s like a marketplace right you have to you have to tell the people who want to buy the ads right and

then you also have to tell the businesses who are going to show the ads yeah so you know marketplaces have the chicken and the egg problem the good thing about uh this industry is we don’t have to solve the supply side problem because there’s already it already exists unlike amazon had to

create e-commerce from scratch um and 50 of the inventory just goes unsold every month which is an economic aberration that should not exist uh that’s just because they don’t know how to do how to do sales and pricing

uh and then on the demand side for advertisers i mean i’ve spent 15 years as a marketer marketing to marketers about marketing i once sent an email that said i know that you know that i know that you opened that email and didn’t

click the link uh you know so we’re we’re pretty good at that um but uh it’s honestly i’ll tell you the biggest mistake we made over the last year was overthinking the problem like we thought we had to come into this space

and fight facebook because facebook has a place based advertising team at least because they tried to hire our cto andre to run their engineering team for it um and we you know wanted to build all this cool machine learning optimization for outcomes and you know we’ve got a liquor store who’s an

advertiser there are three percent of people who go to the liquor store and they go to work super interested to find out who they are that was the original concept is like if it thinks you’re on your way to work don’t show you now to get you go to a liquor store um but we’ve had to you know strip it back man which is like there’s no again there’s no directory we have the only directory of all of the billboard owners and stuff like that in the united states

and how to call them just because we scraped all the state permit websites um you know so solving the most basic problem at a time and not doing if you’ve seen the pursuit of happiness it’s the example i used with the team

that movie uh where it’s a machine that takes a slightly better picture but costs like 10x as much that’s what most startups do is they build something that’s really cool and really powerful but it doesn’t actually solve the core

problem of you know i could give you perfect analytics but if you still had to call 40 companies and it took six weeks to act on it you wouldn’t do it right and so so the simplest problem right because i’m going to kind of rephrase this question because i’m actually really interested to hear your answer like

this the simplest problem is businesses need like a way to very easily display something that other that they’re getting some share of revenue for right

because i mean if it was my if it was my business i would make like this self-service option so simple that a business could come they could do like one basic thing they could show whatever they want on their screen with very little tech and that they would make some percentage of that revenue right kind of how like google adwords did for websites and then you basically you know once you kind of create that self-service you scrape every freaking business ever you know technologically and then you like tell them hey you could be making money doing no work is like how i would approach it like what are your thoughts on that and what’s what’s wrong with what i what

with what i just said no i mean you’re spot on right it’s we should be able to design experiences for customers for the real in the real world the same way we do it online um like we had one chain of bowling alleys that just wanted to be able to hit a button and say i want to sell more bud light this week and have the right content show on the right screen so it might be uh for your

business nurturing content for your own business uh or it might be you know you sell ads which is you know a way to make money off of uh an audience that you’ve gathered online just like you can do um in uh in the real world um

and it’s just it’s just something that people don’t know is an option right it’s something that they don’t they that people don’t necessarily think about and you know we all talk about we want to help small businesses but that that business model has to evolve um there’s other interesting things too like i like we’re super bullish on how do we make this a privacy-centric thing uh there are interesting like tools that we want to plug in where what small

businesses have is they people actually care about them right and what if how would it like change the world if the cigar lounge that i care about making money if you could market to me there as effectively or as creepily as

you could as you can on facebook today but then if i go to walmart you can’t all the all the ad units are dumb right so like what if we gave what if we gave people the ability to control how much information a company had and

could use about them uh based on you know what whether or not they actually care about that company having that data and being able to use it yeah i love that um cool so this this section is is called on the spot so uh there’s like five or six uh questions that we that we ask um the answers are supposed to be 60 seconds or less um so you know you don’t have to like rush through it or anything but they’re supposed to be like kind of quicker uh

so the first question is what is the one book or mindset lesson that most greatly influenced your life uh there’s a book called i think it’s literally just

called platform strategy by a guy named marshall van olstein um which completely just changed the way i think about how you design businesses and strategies and markets um it touches on amazon and and a bunch of

companies that have become really big and how platforms are eating the world i mean innovators dilemma by clay christensen was awesome sales acceleration formula by mark roberts you’ve got to read but um all of those are just teaching me how to do things i knew i should be doing better uh the platform strategy concept uh which is how what our strategy is built on that was totally new that was mind-blowing i love that i’m looking i’m googling it

right now is it by laura claire relier uh marshall van allstein is the author’s name it’s might be platform revolution something like that sorry i should have looked it up oh yeah platform revolution i see it yeah i always look it up because i’m gonna i’m gonna end up reading that um cool so the next one is

what tools or software or apps could you not live without um i mean conveniently we have a free subscription to hubspot uh otherwise i don’t know how people run startups without you know basic analytics and

dashboards and having to do all this crap people need to remember that’s doing a startup now is a lot harder than it was 10 years ago it’s more

competitive there’s more professional discipline and theory around it and you can’t you can’t hack together some solutions uh to make that work um

but the big stuff is con communications right so without trello zoom slack and g suite we’re we’re screwed right like there’s not like we all just come come grinding to it to a total and complete halt yeah it’s so true i use base camp for for everything and i can’t even imagine doing anything without it

yeah um cool the next question is if you could teach everyone in the world one concept what would you teach them uh if i could teach everybody in the world one concept that’s tough i i’m actually going to go with not the like business lesson angle because there’s plenty of those the one concept i

want to teach people is that don’t don’t solve problems you don’t have yet don’t fire yourself from a job you haven’t applied for yet this is my biggest piece of advice i give to younger professionals is it is the hiring manager’s job to tell if you’re not a good fit for a role it’s your job to know if the role is a

good fit for you which your job’s hard enough don’t do theirs too same with like entrepreneurship or like i’ve never applied for a job that i was qualified for including this one um like the whole world is designed to let you know if it doesn’t think you’re good enough or if it doesn’t think you’re ready uh and we spend a lot of time doing and worrying about whether or not uh we’re going to get that feedback just like trust me if you’re not ready to do

something the world will let you know otherwise just keep moving forward and and you’ll you’ll find that that you really get to do some interesting things i love that um cool the next question is uh what was the lowest point

of your career as an entrepreneur and how did you get through it um the lowest point of my career as an entrepreneur last year was hard with having to do some layoffs we staffed up planning for a growth trajectory that wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons uh having to i mean you think things you don’t want you didn’t think you’d have to think about how do we coordinate you know hundreds of people working from home across the

globe especially with a startup that was based in india and not everybody has good internet infrastructure at home um you know everybody’s like scared and worried like how do you keep people calm that was that was the hardest week of my professional career right it’s like how do you be sensitive

to the fact that like people want to go home to their families but you like you’re trying to tell them please don’t do that because you will probably kill your elderly relatives if you do it’s just it’s stuff we didn’t think we’d have to

worry about and stuff that was uh business critical operations um you know that was that fortunately we started doing a dry run of what would happen if

the entire company had to work from home the week before everybody had to start working from home um but that week getting that set up and dealing with the stress um you know and the strain and the concern that the the people on the team had um it was tough that was tough right like you we

don’t think about that being our problem to solve but there was a great quote that like people aren’t at home working uh they’re at home like during a crisis trying to work um and that is uh that was that was a tough week for me but but you know we made it through it we made good decisions everybody i had to lay off i because i also laid myself off uh we found a new job for um which uh you know so it was a tough week but it ended up good i

love it uh so last two questions uh what is the worst advice most people listen to worst advice most people listen to is um this hustle nonsense like the fact that you have to be busy all the time or that you just have to work harder or um one like your your uh intelligence in your your just like reserves

are a limited resource right and it’s better it’s more important to decide what not to do two and i have this argument with my co-founder greg all the time because he is just an animal who never stops um but you need some time to like take like i used to think it was so dumb when halligan who’s the founder

at hubspot would like say that he needed to take time on the cape to think about things but there really is like your job when you’re a startup you don’t know the answers you have to take some time to think about things and we end up just doing so much activity that we don’t actually come up with what’s an optimal solution or what’s what’s like a really good idea in our career professionally at home like the people i see who are who are actually

successful are not the people who just constantly spend time throwing activity at a wall it’s people who take time like you like you mentioned earlier to like plan out and think about a meaningful approach and then and then execute on that with intensity but just constantly going is not i don’t know

how we managed to convince ourselves that was a good idea yeah i’m reading ted turner’s autobiography and he said a fool with a plan is better than a genius with no plan um cool so the last question is what does happiness mean to you what does happiness mean to me man yes tough questions um like uh i like it when i do work that big that that i’m proud of

right so i’ll use hubspot as an example we you know yeah we had microsoft as a customer but adding like 0.

1 percent to their earnings report was a ton of money but it wasn’t the same as the guy who had like a store in kalamazoo michigan who like bet all of his money on hubspot and then you know told us that we single-handedly put

his daughter through college right or um my barber shop in boston that i obviously have not been to in a really long time um you know being able to do one of those giant checks which they really do have by the way you can buy those um you know for some month for money to to him when we launched our pilot program in boston um you know that’s the kind of stuff

that that i like it’s one of the reasons i like the industry i’m in now is it’s almost entirely small businesses and used by small businesses and built by small businesses on the supply side it’s not clear channel in those companies that almost the inventory and uh and and also with with individuals right my wife jokes that i’d love to be small business batman um unfortunately the people who can most benefit from our help are the ones who can generally at least afford it um but you like having a meaningful

impact so if i get hit by an asteroid i can go to the great crm in the sky knowing that uh like i had like a good a good impact not on the work that i did but on the people that i that i was able to help do good work themselves that that makes me happy i really enjoy that i love it me 100 too so if people want to learn more about uh one screen or about you what’s what’s the best way to do that uh the great thing about my last name is it was easy to do the

seo for so google anything close to mollycarjunon you’ll probably find me or you can go check out onescreen.ai just don’t blame our new head of marketing for it he just recently started the website was made by me hubspot had a wonderful design team but i wasn’t on it so um but yeah you

can check out onescreen.ai uh or you can you know find me on twitter linkedin i’m always happy to chat help any other startups that i can cool

thanks so much man it was a great podcast we really appreciate your time and stay safe out there in the pandemic you too kevin take care take care brother
